Built-in bookshelves in Barnsbury

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support, or we divide the run with uprights. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. People typically come to us about room for a record collection and bookcases that lean or wobble; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Barnsbury, whether in older mansion blocks or more recent blocks. In a mansion block flat, the living room may still have a chimney breast and alcoves, and walls that are far from flat, whereas a modern flat tends to have plasterboard walls and an open-plan layout. Built-in bookshelves are designed for whichever you have.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

What happens on fitting day

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the shelving you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up, check the wall and plan the shelf spans with you. Long spans and heavy books are planned for at this stage.
  3. We send a written quote for the bookshelves, for you to look over.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop, using birch plywood or moisture-resistant MDF sized for the span.
  5. The shelving is fitted in your home, scribed to the walls and fixed to suit them.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Is it time for built-in bookshelves?

For people who work from home, the wall behind the desk matters. Shelving close to the desk keeps books and files within reach, and a built-in run looks tidy on a video call. Cupboards below can hide the less tidy things.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Space for art books and records
  • Shelves that sag under books
  • Somewhere to keep toys and books tidy
  • A room lined with books

Dr Johnson's House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

What affects the price in Barnsbury

The price for your room depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

FAQs: built-in bookshelves in Barnsbury

My home in Barnsbury is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Barnsbury affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

What happens if there’s a radiator where I want shelves?

It can be done, but it needs careful planning. Heat needs space to escape, so we leave a gap or open front rather than boxing the radiator in. Some people prefer to keep shelves clear of it or ask a plumber to move it.

Can bookshelves go around a door?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused, and a window can have a seat or desk beneath.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Could you do it yourself?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door.
