Loft storage in Barnsbury

Could you do it yourself?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Loft storage in Barnsbury: what you get

Loft stairs are often narrow and steep, with tight turns. At the design visit, we measure the stairs and landings as well as the loft, so the sections we make in our workshop can be carried up. It’s a step that matters for any loft in Barnsbury. We make eaves cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about clothes with nowhere to go in a loft bedroom and seasonal things cluttering the loft room.

In a flat without a loft, storage has to be found in the hall, the recesses and the rooms themselves. With most households around Barnsbury in purpose-built flats, that is often the starting point. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the eaves cupboard we’ve designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a block without a lift, every section goes up the stairs, so it is sized to be manageable. The tightest landing sets the largest piece. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First we hear about the loft room and what you’d like to store.
  2. At the design visit, the room and the route up are measured.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop, in sections sized for the stairs.
  5. We carry it up, fit it and check every door and drawer with you. Any hand painting is done in the loft.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish works well on every part of the storage. We do it in our workshop, where the finish can be kept even. The colour is your choice.

Pull-out drawers

Drawers along the knee wall make a neat, low run of storage. The top can act as a shelf. The design visit settles the mix.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Note the things that need a home in the loft
  • Note how narrow the loft stairs are
  • Note any vents or insulation in the eaves
  • Mention any parking rules on your street

Don’t pack things so tightly that air can’t move behind the knee wall. Leave the gaps we have designed in. It helps prevent damp behind the storage.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening early stops a small looseness getting worse. If a door drops or a drawer catches, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us.

Your questions about loft storage in Barnsbury

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barnsbury?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

Will a conservation area stop me having loft storage fitted in Barnsbury?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. We don’t plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

How long will the loft storage fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the route up to the loft as clear as possible.

Can you convert my loft as well?

No, the conversion itself is not our work. We design and fit storage once the room is in place, including eaves cupboards, knee-wall drawers and wardrobes.

Where is the furniture made?

Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how eaves cupboards are fixed and fitted. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Barnsbury is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live near Bingfield Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place. For a family home near Robert Blair School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

Is it time for loft storage?

Loft rooms that double as offices or guest rooms need places for things. Built-in storage under the slopes keeps the room flexible.

Here’s what loft storage can help with:

  • Furniture that can’t get up to the loft
  • Boxes piled on loft boards
  • Seasonal things cluttering the loft room
  • A dormer that isn’t being used

If you live in a flat close to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
