- Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
TV and media units for your home in Hoxton
Is it time for TV and media units?
A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand no longer suits it, or the screen takes over the room. A unit around it puts it in proportion.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Wasted space around the screen
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
For an older house near Church of St Anne with St Columba, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
TV and media units in Hoxton
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. If you’re living with empty alcoves beside the TV and space for a soundbar and speakers, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A large number of homes around Hoxton date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer home the living space is usually open-plan, without a chimney breast. So TV and media units often give the room its shape, along a full wall or around the TV. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Spray painting is done in the workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish that suits clean, modern lines.

Some equipment needs line of sight for its remote, so we may leave those shelves open.
TV and media units in Hoxton: local notes
Homes built since 2000 make up about 36% of the housing in the area around Hoxton, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The National Heritage List has 81 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hoxton. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Hoxton, let us know during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Columba, under half a mile east of the centre of Hoxton, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Shoreditch Park, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.
Hoxton is in the London Borough of Hackney, about 1 mile south-east of Shoreditch. Wherever you are in Hoxton, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Hackney.
In N1, N1P and EC1V, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets like City Road, Noel Road and East Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. The A1200 and A1208 runs close to Hoxton; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. If you are just outside Hoxton, we also cover Haggerston (1 mile east), Shoreditch (1 mile south-east), Canonbury (1 mile north), De Beauvoir Town (1 mile north) and St Luke's (1 mile south-west). Other parts of Hackney we cover include Homerton (2 miles north-east), West Hackney (2 miles north), Hackney (2 miles north-east), Lower Clapton (2 miles north-east), Stoke Newington (2 miles north) and Clapton (2 miles north-east). Hoxton is among the bigger places we cover in Hackney.

Questions we are often asked
Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Hoxton?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you fit TV and media units in a flat in Hoxton?
At the design visit, we measure the way in along with the room itself. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Bring the sizes to the design visit.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
From workshop to your room
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Door frames and corners get covers too. The sections are assembled in the room.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
- A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
How to prepare
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To arrange the visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Advice
What affects the price in Hoxton
There is no set price, because there’s no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- The internal fittings
- Parking and unloading on your street
- How many doors and drawers there are
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What we need to know
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Flats, leases and landlords
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, as it makes good use of an awkward room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
