Mildmay TV and Media Units

In Mildmay, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. We design your TV unit at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Wasted space around the screen

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. Viewing height matters too: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are speakers muffled behind doors and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

A large share of the homes around Mildmay were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Houses of that age typically have a chimney breast in the front and back reception rooms, with an alcove either side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Because old walls bow and floors slope, the units are scribed to follow the wall and levelled at the base, then cut neatly around the skirting and any picture rail or cornice.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day

In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays at the measuring visit.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment, with the cable routes left clear.

Advice

Where other trades come in

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Structural changes to the wall
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating

If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Birch plywood

Before and after fitting day

Most of what helps is simple. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Check where the seating will go

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.

Avoid piling devices on one shelf because heat builds up between them. Give each its own space.

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How square the room is
  • The width and height of the space
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Questions we are often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Mildmay?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.

What are your TV and media units made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Everything is made at our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. It is built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Within a mile of the centre of Mildmay, 13 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Mildmay fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

For a family home near Newington Green Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else. Near listed buildings like Church of St Matthias, less than half a mile north-east of the centre of Mildmay, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live near Highbury Fields, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
