Copse Hill Window Seats

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on window seats in Copse Hill starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A nursery or bedroom short of storage
  • A bay with no furniture that fits

Window seats in Copse Hill

Each window seat is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the seat its strength, as it is strong and holds screws firmly, while MDF takes paint well for the fronts and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Copse Hill and fitted. Typical reasons to get in touch are looking for a reading spot by the window and a recess under the window doing nothing, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

With interwar houses or semis a big part of the picture around Copse Hill, loft conversions are common, and they leave low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. For lofts, we work in spaces that are already converted or boarded.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for window seats

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the window, and whether a radiator sits beneath it.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out how warm air from the radiator will reach the room.
  3. Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The seat is fitted with the radiator grille in place, so the heat keeps moving.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf benches aren’t designed to sit over a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. A bespoke seat has a grille or open front designed in, so the heat can reach the room. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Why us?

Storage in Copse Hill homes: local notes

In the area around Copse Hill, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Copse Hill, Historic England’s list includes Southside House (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of the Sacred Heart (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Around a third of the homes in the area around Copse Hill (about 33%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bay windows are a feature of many interwar houses, and they suit a seat with storage below.

For families living near Hollymount School, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. Living in a block of flats near Raynes Park station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front.

Questions from Copse Hill

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Copse Hill?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Copse Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we’ll see what we can do.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can I send photos before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

What affects the cost of window seats

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How square the room is
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The overall size of the piece

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Helping us understand the room

You do not need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
