TV and media units for homes in East Wickham

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. Typical reasons to get in touch are nowhere good for speakers and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, which matters around East Wickham, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. A long through room gives TV and media units a whole wall to work with, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing that stand up to daily use. Its layered edge can be painted or shown.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

What affects the price in East Wickham

Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The width and height of the space

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Questions from East Wickham

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Wickham?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Is East Wickham in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Bexley, East Wickham included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

How do I get started?

Simply use our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a written quote.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It is made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

TV and media units in East Wickham: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 57% of the housing in the neighbourhood around East Wickham, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There is a conservation area within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of East Wickham, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 58% of households in the neighbourhood around East Wickham, according to Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Danson House, about 1.3 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Welling station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Shoulder of Mutton Green, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

East Wickham is about 3 miles south of Sidcup, part of the London Borough of Bexley. Design visits and fitting in East Wickham can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Across Bexley, we cover East Wickham, along with the rest of the borough.

Every address in DA16, SE18 and SE2 is within our area for TV and media units. Fitting day, step by step

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.
