TV and Media Units in Avery Hill
In Avery Hill, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.
- Clutter around the TV
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- A tangle of wires behind the TV

Cables are the part most people want to hide. We plan cable routes through the unit from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. People normally come to us about bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and a screen at the wrong height, and the answer is built in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
A good part of the housing around Avery Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Avery Hill homes and TV and media units
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Avery Hill were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Avery Hill. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Avery Hill, let us know at the measuring visit. We will plan where the van can stop.
If you live in a flat close to Falconwood station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your children go to Stationers' Crown Woods Academy or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Eltham Palace, about 1.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Avery Hill is about 2 miles north of Plumstead, part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We cover Avery Hill as part of our work across Greenwich, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Avery Hill is one of 18 places on our list for Greenwich.
Every home in SE9, DA15 and DA16 is covered for TV and media units. Our area takes in homes on streets such as Bexley Road, Glenure Road and Perpins Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. The A210 run close to Avery Hill, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Close by, we also work in Blackfen (1 mile east), Eltham (1 mile south-west), New Eltham (1 mile south), Falconwood (1 mile north-east) and Well Hall (1 mile west). Elsewhere in Greenwich, we also cover Plumstead (2 miles north), Greenwich (4 miles north-west), Woolwich (3 miles north), Westcombe Park (3 miles north-west), Maze Hill (4 miles north-west) and Coldharbour (2 miles south-west).

Practical tips
The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Find out how much space each box needs around it
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
Use the access panels and cable routes when you add or change leads rather than drilling new holes. It keeps the unit tidy.
Heavy equipment is best kept low, and no single shelf overloaded.
What it is made from
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. You choose the colour at the design stage.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It is easy to touch up later.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
FAQs: TV and media units in Avery Hill
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Avery Hill?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Does a conservation area in or near Avery Hill affect fitted furniture?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How do you hide the TV cables?
That is the aim, and it’s planned from the start. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.
Do TV units need ventilation?
Equipment gives off heat, so it needs air around it. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Keep the vents clear once it’s in use.
What materials do you use?
We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF gives a smooth, stable surface for paint; birch plywood is strong and good for shelves and drawer boxes.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
That’s a job for your electrician. Ideally it’s done before fitting and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
From workshop to your room
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
How to get a quote
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
Standalone TV units cost less and arrive quickly. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on, which is a fair point in its favour. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit.
