When is bespoke worth it?

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

About our TV and media units in Woolwich

We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Woolwich once the design and quote are agreed. If your home has speakers muffled behind doors and empty alcoves beside the TV, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Most homes around Woolwich are purpose-built flats, so the route in is part of the plan. TV and media units are made in sections sized to go up the stairs, into the lift and through the front door, then joined and scribed in the room. A lease can require consent before you fix furniture to the walls, so it’s worth checking first.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Caring for painted furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Label cables when you set things up.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Some closed off-the-shelf cabinets have little ventilation. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Standalone furniture takes up floor without using the height of the room. Built-in pieces use the full height and the tricky corners.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote.

TV and media units in Woolwich: local notes

In the area around Woolwich, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 31%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Woolwich is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Woolwich, as it does anywhere else in London. How the van gets to your door is planned during the design visit.

For families living near Mulgrave Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live near Woolwich Common, TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. The wider area includes historic houses such as Queen's House, about 2.9 miles west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Woolwich is about 1 mile east of Plumstead, part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We cover Woolwich as part of our work across Greenwich. Woolwich is one of the places in Greenwich where we make TV and media units.

Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: SE18, E16 and SE7. With hand painting, you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

How fitting day works

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by arrangement where the building permits it.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Starting with a design visit

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.

Questions from Woolwich

My home in Woolwich is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Woolwich?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you’ve chosen.

What happens during the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. We give each box its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Electrical work is not something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
