TV and media units in Eel Pie Island
Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. If you’re living with clutter around the TV and speakers muffled behind doors, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms can be very different from one street to the next. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. TV and media units are designed for the room in Eel Pie Island that you have, and long shelves are sized not to sag.
We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it is made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

How fitting day works
At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including pictures on nearby walls. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Then the sections come in and are joined in place.
- You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
- We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design.
- We send a written quote for the unit.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
Before fitting day
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a written quote. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Practical tips
Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
Dust collects around equipment and vents, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.
Avoid piling devices on one shelf, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.

Common questions about TV and media units
Does a conservation area in or near Eel Pie Island affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Eel Pie Island?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What if the stairs or lift are small?
It is made in sections. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
How do I get a quote?
Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough measurements and a few photos help, and we’ll arrange a design visit, followed by a written quote.
Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. For a wall-mounted TV, the layout works around the bracket position.
What if the wall is cold or damp?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Where other trades come in
Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Structural changes to the wall
If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How a job runs, step by step.

Is it time for TV and media units?
A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- A cabinet that traps heat
- Equipment with nowhere proper to go
The wider area includes historic houses like Richmond House, about 0.2 miles west. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Will they visit to measure before quoting?
- How they handle walls that aren’t straight
- A written quote that sets out the job

Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight.
