Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that’s best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
TV and media units for homes in Whitton
TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The finish is spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in a colour agreed with you. We work across London, including Whitton, after a design visit and a quote in writing. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a cabinet that traps heat and standard units leaving gaps.
A good part of the housing around Whitton is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls in houses of that age are usually straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we are often asked
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Whitton?
Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Whitton is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.
Does a conservation area in or near Whitton affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
How long will the fitting take?
The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables, and if it stands on the unit we size the top for it.
Before and after fitting day
A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:
- Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
- Mention parking and stairs when we visit
After setting up, check that the boxes aren’t getting too warm. Don’t block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.
Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.
What happens on fitting day
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment.
- We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
- You receive a written quote setting out the unit, materials and finish.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
- The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Getting a quote
You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Materials and finishes
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain to show through, so a painted TV unit looks calm and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade.
Doors and drawer fronts
Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.
Living-room carpentry in Whitton: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 56% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Whitton, with about 18% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 6 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Whitton. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Richmond upon Thames has its own. Where a street in Whitton is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
For a flat near Whitton station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near All Saints Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Close to Crane Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.
