Need fitted wardrobes in Eel Pie Island?

What it costs

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • How big the furniture is

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

What to send when you get in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • Your postcode and the borough

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.

About our fitted wardrobes in Eel Pie Island

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage boxes stacked under the bed and a room too narrow for hinged doors; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Homes in an area like Eel Pie Island can come from many different periods, and the walls in a bedroom might be brick, blockwork, lath and plaster or plasterboard. We check at the design visit and choose fixings for each one. With a chimney breast, the alcoves are the obvious place; without one, a full wall normally is.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture is designed for no room in particular, whereas fitted pieces are designed for one room: yours. The finish is chosen to suit the space.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Eel Pie Island

Is Eel Pie Island in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Eel Pie Island is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details.

Does a conservation area in or near Eel Pie Island affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the price worked out?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It’s common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Eel Pie Island

An tricky room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors

Richmond House, about 0.2 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?

Eel Pie Island homes and fitted wardrobes

In the streets around Eel Pie Island, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 32%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Within a mile of the centre of Eel Pie Island, 18 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. A quarter or more of the homes in the streets around Eel Pie Island (about 27%) date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead.

For a family home near St Mary's Church of England Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live near Marble Hill Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
