How we make TV and media units for Strawberry Hill
Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. People usually come to us about a tangle of wires behind the TV and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. That matters around Strawberry Hill, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Flats, leases and landlords
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
Questions from Strawberry Hill
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Strawberry Hill?
Yes. Strawberry Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
What if I buy a larger TV?
If you are likely to upgrade, we can leave room for it. Tell us the size you have in mind so the space and cable routes suit it.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
What happens when you come to measure?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position. The wall needs to be sound for the bracket.
Why bespoke in Strawberry Hill?
Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
Why choose us
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
- Over 300 projects completed

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.
- You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
- We visit to measure and discuss the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A written quote follows, with the finish set out.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.
Before fitting day
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know

Pricing TV and media units in Strawberry Hill
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How big the furniture is
- The internal fittings
- How square the room is
- The number of doors and drawers
We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, get in touch through our contact form.
Getting in touch
Ahead of the design visit, we’ll typically ask about:
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Where you live, with the postcode
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you are after
To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a quote in writing follows.
TV and media units in Strawberry Hill: local notes
About 47% of the homes in the streets around Strawberry Hill went up before 1919, and about 18% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The centre of Strawberry Hill is within about a quarter of a mile of the Strawberry Hill Road Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Richmond upon Thames has its own. Depending on your street in Strawberry Hill, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a council bay suspension may be needed. Let us know about parking during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like Chapel in the Wood, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Strawberry Hill, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If you live in a flat close to Strawberry Hill station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For families living near Kneller Hall Senior School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.
Strawberry Hill is about 1 mile north of Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Strawberry Hill is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. We cover places right across Richmond upon Thames.

If you’re just outside Strawberry Hill, we also cover Fulwell (1 mile south-west), Eel Pie Island (1 mile north-east), Twickenham (1 mile north), Teddington (1 mile south) and Whitton (1 mile north-west). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like Richmond (2 miles north-east), Richmond upon Thames (2 miles north-east), Hampton (2 miles south-west), Barnes (5 miles north-east), Kew (4 miles north-east) and Hanworth (2 miles west).

Green spaces nearby include Ham Lands.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
