How we make fitted cupboards for Eel Pie Island

A fitted cupboard is built for one space and nowhere else. It can rise to the ceiling or stop at a height that suits the room, and it’s trimmed to the walls so there are no tricky gaps. Hallways, landings, utility rooms, boot rooms and alcoves all make good homes for one. The inside is planned around what you need to keep there. Typical reasons to get in touch are storage for towels and bedding and storage for coats and shoes in the hallway; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A deep space is only useful if you can reach the back of it, so the design uses drawers, lids or shelves to bring things within reach. For a home in Eel Pie Island, what works depends on how deep and how tall the space is. Any meters, fuse board or boiler keep the access they need.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; if you live in a house, let us know about steps, paths and parking. We plan the details of the day during the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us whether the cupboard will house a boiler, meters or a fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the cupboard so meters, fuse boards and any boiler stay easy to reach. Boiler work itself is for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.
  3. You receive a written quote for the cupboards.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with vents and access panels where they’re needed.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Preparing the room

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

Getting a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Common questions about fitted cupboards

Do you cover homes near Twickenham station?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make fitted cupboards for a home in Eel Pie Island?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London, and Eel Pie Island is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Bespoke fitted cupboards or ready-made?

Standard cupboards come in set widths and heights, and the space around them is often wasted. A fitted cupboard can run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so less space goes to waste. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Caring for painted furniture

Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:

  • Go easy on new doors for a while
  • List what you want to store before the design visit
  • Mention any boiler, meter or fuse board early
  • Have damp sorted before fitting

Hand-painted finishes are easy to touch up. A spray finish gives a smooth, even surface that cleans easily with a soft cloth. Keep a note of the paint colour for later.

Leasehold flats can have rules about alterations, so check your lease first. We cannot advise on your lease, and it is best done early.

Do you need fitted cupboards in Eel Pie Island?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They are not much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, so a cupboard has to be designed around them. We plan the doors, panels and ventilation with that in mind.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Cupboards for a utility or boot room
  • Tidying away the gas and electricity meters
  • Using the full height of a room
  • Somewhere for coats, shoes and bags

Living in a block of flats near Twickenham station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

How to choose a carpenter in London

What it costs

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • The number of doors and drawers

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Helping us understand the room

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

For a quote for fitted cupboards in Eel Pie Island, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea, with sizes if you have them. Next comes a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.
