How we make TV and media units for Enfield Lock
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. If you’re living with a screen at the wrong height and boxes with no ventilation, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Enfield Lock, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. We plan ventilation for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Ready-made furniture rarely suits a bay, a box room or a bulkhead over the stairs, and those are common in interwar houses. Fitted furniture is made around them.
How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Built-in living-room furniture in Enfield Lock
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Enfield Lock were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 36%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Enfield Lock is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. The ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) now covers the whole of London, Enfield included. Vans bringing furniture to Enfield Lock fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.

TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. Forty Hall, about 1.8 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Questions from Enfield Lock
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Enfield Lock?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What are your TV and media units made from?
We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
How is the price worked out?
It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
How do you stop equipment overheating in a TV unit?
Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits. We give each box its own space.
How long will the fitting take?
It depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The unit is built in our workshop first.
What affects the cost of TV and media units
Several things affect the price:
- The internal fittings
- The width and height of the space
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Parking and unloading on your street
The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Before the design visit
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Approximate measurements of the space
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Fitting day, step by step
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

Advice
Practical tips
Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Think about the viewing height from your sofa
- Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
- Note the size of each box and speaker
- Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them, so the paint isn’t scuffed.
Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, and no single shelf overloaded.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t give advice on leases.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
