Bush Hill Park TV and Media Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Bush Hill Park starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.

  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste

About our TV and media units in Bush Hill Park

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. People typically come to us about a tangle of wires behind the TV and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Bush Hill Park, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it is a layout worth planning for. TV and media units normally go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

What TV and media units can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting works for TV and media units

At the end, we tidy up and take up the floor coverings. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Living-room storage in Bush Hill Park

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Bush Hill Park were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 40%) and before 1919 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bush Hill Park include The Tower (Grade II), about 0.5 miles west. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We can then plan where the van will stop.

For families living near The Raglan Junior School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. If you live in a period home close to St Stephen's Parish Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes close to hand. They’re painted in the same colour as the rest.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. Its height can match the skirting board.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it during the design visit.

Common questions about TV and media units

Is Bush Hill Park in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Bush Hill Park is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Do you need TV and media units in Bush Hill Park?

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. A built-in unit gives that wall order and holds books and everyday things as well.

Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:

  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • Equipment with nowhere proper to go
  • Clutter around the TV

Choosing a carpenter

  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
