How we make TV and media units for Enfield

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about space for a soundbar and speakers and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Enfield, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

A written quote follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting often suits units in older houses. The colour is agreed with you.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, so there is no gap.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

Once your equipment is in, check that it isn’t running hot. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, and no single shelf overloaded.

Living-room storage in Enfield

In the streets around Enfield, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 31%) and before 1919 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Enfield include Church of St Andrew Enfield Parish Church (Grade II*), under half a mile north-west, and North East Building of Enfield Grammar School (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. Vans bringing furniture to Enfield fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to Church of St Andrew, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Enfield Town Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For a family home near Enfield Grammar School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Enfield is about 2 miles south-east of Edmonton, within the London Borough of Enfield. From period terraces to newer flats in Enfield, we measure the room as it is and design around it. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

We cover every part of the EN1, EN2 and N21 postcode area. We cover homes on streets like Lea Road, Farr Road and Cecil Road, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. The A110 run close to Enfield; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. We also cover the places around Enfield: Bush Hill Park (1 mile south-east), Bush Hill (1 mile south), Enfield Chase (1 mile west), Gordon Hill (1 mile north) and Forty Hill (1 mile north-east). Other parts of the rest of London we cover include Edmonton (2 miles south-east), Palmers Green (3 miles south-west), New Southgate (4 miles south-west), Upper Edmonton (3 miles south), Oakthorpe Park (3 miles south) and Arnos Grove (3 miles south-west).

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and talk through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it is useful to have them in mind early.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear.

Preparing the room

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Common questions about TV and media units

Do you cover homes near Enfield Town station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Enfield affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop.

What affects the price in Enfield

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How square the room is
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

What we need to know

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. It’s useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.
