  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Too little room for clothes

Fitted wardrobes for your home in Merton Abbey

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Merton Abbey?

Couples often want storage that works for two. We can plan separate sections for each person.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Living in a block of flats near Haydons Road station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • A written quote that sets out the job
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

How we make fitted wardrobes for Merton Abbey

Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. If you are living with space under the eaves going to waste and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Where the window, radiator and door sit decides most of a bedroom layout. Whatever kind of home you have in Merton Abbey, we start there, and fitted furniture is planned around them. Furniture is kept clear of radiators so the room stays warm.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

When is bespoke worth it?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Flats, leases and landlords

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

Bedrooms in Merton Abbey: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Merton Abbey were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Merton Abbey. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

The wider area includes historic houses like Southside House, about 2.2 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For a family home near Haslemere Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Merton Abbey is about 2 miles north-west of Wimbledon, in the London Borough of Merton. We can visit homes in Merton Abbey on weekdays, or on a Saturday by prior arrangement. We list Merton Abbey among 20 places we cover in Merton.

In SW19, CR4 and SW17, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here like East Road, Hardy Road and Mount Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted wardrobes. FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Merton Abbey

Do you make fitted wardrobes for homes in Merton Abbey?

Yes, we work across Merton, Merton Abbey included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Merton Abbey?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early

Hang clothes evenly along each rail. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
