How we make TV and media units for Sutton Common

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in so the sockets land in the right place. If you’re living with clutter around the TV and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

A good part of the housing around Sutton Common is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought units come in the maker’s finishes. We paint ours in the colour you choose. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Fitted furniture is designed around them.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Before and after fitting day

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

A soft, slightly damp cloth is all painted surfaces need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Don’t let clutter build up against the unit’s vents as things change.

Questions we are often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having TV and media units fitted in Sutton Common?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Sutton Common?

Yes, Sutton Common is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Sutton and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind, if you expect to upgrade. Tell us the size you might move to at the design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the design visit.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

How fitting works for TV and media units

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is normally more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

TV and media units for homes in Sutton Common

About 73% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Sutton Common went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 11% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Sutton Common is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it’s useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live near Morden Hall Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. The wider area includes historic houses such as Nonsuch Mansion, about 2.1 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Mecca Bingo Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
