TV and media units in North Cheam: what you get

A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. Instead of a stand, a tangle of wires and a few odd shelves, the whole wall is designed at once. For a living room in North Cheam, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. Typical reasons to get in touch are bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around North Cheam, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

From workshop to your room

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared, as we will have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

A quote begins with a few details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Your questions about TV and media units in North Cheam

Do you cover homes near West Sutton station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Is North Cheam in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. North Cheam is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Sutton and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not typically. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Built-in living-room furniture in North Cheam

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around North Cheam were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 58%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 13%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of North Cheam is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Sutton sets its own rules. If your road in North Cheam falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Parking near your home is worth mentioning during the design visit.

If you live near Nonsuch Park, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Nonsuch Mansion, about 1 mile south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

North Cheam is about 1 mile east of Sutton, in the London Borough of Sutton. North Cheam is part of the area we cover. Our work takes in places right across Sutton.

Every home in SM3, KT4 and SM1 is within our area for TV and media units. Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Check where the seating will go

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it.

Heavy equipment is best kept low, with the weight spread across shelves.

What prompts TV and media units in North Cheam

In an open-plan space, the TV wall is on show from everywhere. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and adds storage for the rest of the room.

People normally get in touch with us about things like these:

  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room
  • Speakers muffled behind doors
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor

If your children go to Cheam Park Farm Primary Academy or a school nearby, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
