FAQs: TV and media units in Beddington

Is Beddington in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Sutton, Beddington included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Beddington affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How do I get a quote?

Just get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

TV and media units in Beddington

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with room around it so it doesn’t look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are a big screen that dominates the wall and boxes with no ventilation, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Around Beddington, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Pricing TV and media units in Beddington

There is no set price, because there’s no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • How square the room is
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Spray painting or hand painting

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we’ll usually ask about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

What we don’t do

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood

From workshop to your room

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. A quote in writing follows for the unit.
  4. The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable openings and vents cut in.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Starting with a design visit

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Built-in living-room furniture in Beddington

About 52% of the homes in the area around Beddington went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 22% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Beddington is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Sutton sets its own rules. If your street in Beddington is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

For a flat near Waddon station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. For a family home near Beddington Park Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Near listed buildings like Beddington Place (great Hall Only), less than half a mile west of the centre of Beddington, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
