Wandsworth TV and Media Units

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make TV and media units for homes in Wandsworth, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • A screen at the wrong height

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing for you to look over. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

About our TV and media units in Wandsworth

Everything starts with the screen. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you’re likely to upgrade, with a margin so it isn’t a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. Most enquiries start with boxes and consoles on the floor and space for a soundbar and speakers; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a house from the Victorian or Edwardian years, the front room typically keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Wandsworth, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting, so they sit as if they came with the house.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

Wandsworth homes and TV and media units

In the neighbourhood around Wandsworth, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 49%) and the years since 2000 (about 27%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Wandsworth include Church of St Anne (Grade II*), less than half a mile east, and Church Row (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around Wandsworth (about 27%) were built since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In homes built since 2000, living rooms are often open-plan with stud walls, so the fixings go into the studs, or heavier pieces stand on the floor.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Fulham Palace, about 1.5 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If you live in a period home close to St Anne's Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access left for later changes. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Why us?

  • A design visit, then a written quote
  • More than 300 projects completed

What TV and media units cannot fix

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we don’t do:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Birch plywood

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Mention parking and stairs when we visit
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.

Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space. Each one needs space around it.

Your questions about TV and media units in Wandsworth

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Wandsworth?

Yes. We cover the whole of London, all 32 boroughs and the City of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.

My house in Wandsworth is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How do you hide the TV cables?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy without taking the unit apart. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Open-plan living is another reason. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and adds storage for the rest of the room.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • A screen at the wrong height
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Speakers muffled behind doors

Close to King George's Park? TV and media units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that are not straight
