Living-room carpentry in Putney: local notes

In the streets around Putney, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 32%) and before 1919 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Part of Putney is in the West Putney Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Fewer homes around Putney date from before 1919 than across Wandsworth: about 28%, against about 44%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). So the walls behind TV and media units here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the measuring visit.

Living in a block of flats near Putney station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If your children go to Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near Polish Church of St John the Evangelist, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Putney is part of the London Borough of Wandsworth, about 2 miles east of Clapham Junction. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Putney is part of that. Our Wandsworth coverage includes Putney, along with the rest of the borough.

We cover every part of SW15, SW19 and SW13 for TV and media units. Streets in the area include Putney High Street, Upper Richmond Road and Spencer Walk, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. The A3 and B306 run close to Putney; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. If you’re just outside Putney, we also cover Roehampton (1 mile south-west), Barnes (1 mile north-west), Fulham (1 mile north-east), Mortlake (2 miles west) and Wimbledon Park (2 miles south). Across the rest of Wandsworth, our area takes in Clapham Junction (2 miles east), Battersea (2 miles east), Tooting (3 miles south-east), Tooting Bec (3 miles south-east), Balham (3 miles south-east) and Southfields (2 miles south-east). Putney is one of the larger places we cover in Wandsworth.

TV and media units in Putney

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. If your home has nowhere good for speakers and boxes and consoles on the floor, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A good share of the homes around Putney were built in the post-war years, between 1945 and the early 1970s. Rooms from that era are often squarer than in older houses, and many have no chimney breast at all. That makes a full wall of TV and media units a strong option, or a recess built out with cupboards either side. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork, and the fixings are matched to them.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Questions from Putney

Is parking a problem for fitting in Putney?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Putney?

Yes, Putney is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Wandsworth and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

It depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning TV and media units often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
  • Note the screen size you have or plan to buy
  • List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them to avoid marks.

Label cables when you set things up, so changes later are simple.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Screen sizes change, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can leave room for a larger screen, so the unit lasts longer. Ready-made pieces each bring their own height and depth, and a room full of them can look cluttered, while one fitted run looks calm and uses the space better. It’s painted in a colour you choose.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we will have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know in advance helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

How to prepare

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

How to get a quote

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

What affects the cost of TV and media units

The price for your room depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Helping us understand the room

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
