About our TV and media units in Southfields
Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so equipment cannot simply be shut in a closed cupboard. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and equipment with nowhere proper to go, that is what TV and media units are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the chimney breast tends to survive even when the fireplace itself has been blocked up. That matters around Southfields, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. TV and media units built into the recesses either side are scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

TV and media units in Southfields: local notes
About 57% of the homes in the area around Southfields went up before 1919, and about 14% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southfields include Earlsfield House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St Michael and All Angels (Grade II), less than half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 57% of homes in the area around Southfields were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. In houses of that age, the chimney breast often becomes the TV wall, with cupboards in the alcoves for set-top boxes and speakers.
For a family home near Floreat Wandsworth Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. Living in a block of flats near Earlsfield station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

What prompts TV and media units in Southfields
Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight.
People usually get in touch with us about needs like these:
- Somewhere to keep games tidy
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Leads that show from every angle
Close to King George's Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.
Before you choose who makes it
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
Flat-pack or bespoke?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.
- It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
- A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections that fit the route in.
- We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Starting with a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Where other trades come in
We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
- Configuring the TV and sound system
- Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

FAQs: TV and media units in Southfields
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Southfields?
Yes. Southfields is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Southfields?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and each section is made to a size that will get through.
Should I send photos?
Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Can you add sockets behind the TV?
Electrical work is not something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.
Caring for painted furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- List every box, console and speaker that needs a home
- Let us know about access early
- Think about whether you will upgrade the screen
Doors can settle a little once the unit is in use. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line them up again.
Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.
