Questions from Battersea

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Battersea?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

How we make TV and media units for Battersea

If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan the panels and shelves around the bracket position, with a route for the cables behind the screen. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. Most enquiries start with equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and a screen at the wrong height; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

In a Victorian or Edwardian terrace, the front room typically keeps its chimney breast even where the fireplace has gone. That matters around Battersea, as a large share of the homes there were built before 1919. The recesses either side take TV and media units scribed to the plaster and cut around the skirting.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Pricing TV and media units in Battersea

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

To make a start, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. It’s also easy to replace a stand when your equipment changes, which is a fair point in its favour. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

TV and media units for homes in Battersea

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Battersea were built before 1919 (about 48%) and since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Battersea, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mark (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Church of the Ascension (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Wandsworth is inside it. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Battersea. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Clapham Welsh Presbyterian Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Carlyle's House, about 1.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Clapham Junction station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Battersea is within the London Borough of Wandsworth, about 1 mile north-west of Clapham Junction. We design and make TV and media units for homes in Battersea and across Wandsworth, as part of our work in every London borough. In Wandsworth, Battersea is one of the places we cover.

Postcode districts we cover here for TV and media units: SW11, SW18 and SW4. Whether you live on a street such as York Road, Este Road and Home Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for TV and media units. Main roads around Battersea include the A3207. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you’re just outside Battersea, we also cover Clapham Junction (1 mile north-west), Sands End (1 mile north-west), Chelsea Harbour (1 mile north-west), Wandsworth (1 mile south-west) and Clapham (1 mile east). Across the rest of Wandsworth, our area takes in Putney (2 miles west), Tooting (2 miles south), Tooting Bec (2 miles south), Balham (2 miles south-east), Southfields (2 miles south-west) and Furzedown (3 miles south). Being one of the larger places in Wandsworth, Battersea is covered for TV and media units and everything else we make.

How fitting works for TV and media units

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us at the measuring visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Ask for a quote

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.
