TV and media units for your home in Summerstown
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
TV and media units in Summerstown: what you get
In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and nowhere good for speakers.
Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and TV and media units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Summerstown went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the design visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Living-room storage in Summerstown
In the area around Summerstown, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. There are 7 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Summerstown. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Wandsworth included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Summerstown. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Leather Bottle Public House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Burntwood School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design. The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 2.4 miles south-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Questions we are often asked
Do you make TV and media units for homes in Summerstown?
Yes. Summerstown is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Wandsworth and London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Summerstown?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Will the cables be hidden?
That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later without taking the unit apart. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.
Do you move sockets for a TV unit?
That is a job for your electrician. Ideally it is done before fitting and we design the cable routes around the sockets.
Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Plastering or decorating around the unit
- Configuring the TV and sound system
- New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Why bespoke in Summerstown?
Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. If you’re renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Ready-made units stop well short of a tall period ceiling, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Fitted furniture can go all the way up.
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

What it costs
To work out the quote, we look at:
- The overall size of the piece
- The internal fittings
- Parking near your home
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
What to send when you contact us
To help us picture the room, please include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- What the furniture needs to hold
To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.
Fitting day, step by step
If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
- We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in.
- Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
How to get a quote
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, send us a few details through our contact form.
