Walk-in Wardrobes in Belmont

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on walk-in wardrobes in Belmont starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A walk-in wardrobe within the bedroom
  • Storage for clothes that have outgrown the wardrobe
  • A built-in dressing table

Fitted bedroom furniture in Belmont

About 61% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Belmont went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how walk-in wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Part of Belmont is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Harrow is inside it. Vans bringing furniture to Belmont fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Anselm, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Close to Canons Park? A bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Kenton Lane Farmhouse, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Belmont

Beyond the hanging, drawers, shelves and shoe storage do a lot of the work. Shelves suit folded clothes and bags, smaller things go in drawers and shoes can have racks or shelves of their own. A dressing table with a mirror can be built in where there is space. People usually come to us about room for two wardrobes in one space and a built-in dressing table; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Belmont, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the walk-in wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

What affects the cost of walk-in wardrobes

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • The overall size of the piece

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

What we need to know

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold

It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, send us a few details through our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Belmont?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Harrow & Wealdstone station?

Yes, homes across Harrow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

We plan the route in at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

That is normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room.
  2. We visit, measure and talk through hanging, shoe storage and a dressing table, planned around the way you get dressed.
  3. A written quote is sent to you, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check every door and drawer. Each unit is set level and scribed to the walls.

Before we arrive

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

How to get a quote

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is finished before fitting day.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.
