Wall Beds in Castle Green

In Castle Green, we design wall beds around the room you actually have. Your wall bed is designed at a visit to your home and built in our workshop.

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A guest bed that disappears in the day
  • A hobby room with a bed for guests

Wall beds in Castle Green

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Give the paint time to cure fully

New paintwork takes a while to harden. Go easy on the doors and front at first, and wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth only.

If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Your lease is something to check with whoever manages the building.

How we make wall beds for Castle Green

Many people now work from home in a room that also has to sleep guests. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, without the bed taking over. We can allow for cables to the desk, while new sockets are for your electrician. If you’re living with a guest bed that disappears in the day and a playroom that can sleep visitors, wall beds made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Castle Green, so it is a room shape worth planning for. Every wall is measured, as a room that looks square rarely is.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Spray-painted pieces come finished from the workshop, while hand painting can happen on site. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage.
  4. The bed housing and any shelves are made in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Getting a quote

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Advice

Why people ask for wall beds in Castle Green

Often the bed is one part of a bigger plan. Shelves, cupboards or a desk built around it make the whole wall useful.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • A bed that fills a little-used room
  • A storage wall with a bed inside
  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • Hiding the bed when it is not in use

If you live near Mayesbrook Park, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves beside a wall bed often carry books, and birch plywood helps them resist sagging.

Spray-painted finish

We spray paint in the workshop for a smooth, factory-like finish.

Your questions about wall beds in Castle Green

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Castle Green?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Do you make wall beds for homes in Castle Green?

Yes, we work across Barking and Dagenham, Castle Green included, and across the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

What matters most is that the mattress suits the mechanism. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can pick the right one.

Are fold-down beds safe to use?

Safety depends on a secure fixing and sensible use. We fix the mechanism as its maker specifies; you lower it steadily with the floor clear.

How long will the wall bed take to fit?

It depends on the design. The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote, so you will know before we start.

Could you do it yourself?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Castle Green homes and wall beds

In the area around Castle Green, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 55%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 55% of homes in the streets around Castle Green date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, which suits fitted storage made around its bulkhead. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Castle Green, let us know at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

For a flat near Barking Riverside station, wall beds are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If your children go to Jo Richardson Community School or a school nearby, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
