Under-stairs storage in Church End, Barnet

We make under-stairs storage for homes in Church End, designed around the room you have. Your under-stairs cupboard is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.

  • A fuse board that is hard to get to
  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

Under-stairs storage in Church End

Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. Typical reasons to get in touch are a dark, wasted space under the stairs and a sloping corner nobody can reach, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. For a home in Church End, the design visit is where the options are worked out. Under-stairs cupboards are then built in our workshop and fitted on site.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Drawers made for the space can run the full depth, so nothing is lost at the back. We size each drawer for what it will carry. Few rooms have truly flat walls and level floors, so standalone furniture can lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

Why choose us

  • Work across the whole of London
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
  • Made for your room, not a standard size

See bespoke vs off-the-shelf and how to compare quotes.

Could you do it yourself?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

How fitting day works

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. It starts when you contact us with some details about the space.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and talk through the design.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Ask for a quote

To make a start, tell us about the room on our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and a written quote follows.

Questions from Church End

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Church End?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

I live in a flat in Church End. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How do I get a quote for under-stairs storage in Church End?

The first step is to get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How much will my under-stairs cupboard cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Under-stairs storage in Church End: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Church End were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Church End include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and The Manor House (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for example removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Church End, let us know during the design visit. We will plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to Pardes House Grammar School or a school nearby, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Close to Victoria Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.
