How it is made

Spray-painted finish

For a sleek finish, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well for a clean, even look.

How we make walk-in wardrobes for Church End

Most designs start with the hanging. Long hanging suits coats and dresses, and two rails stacked one above the other suit shirts, jackets and trousers. The balance of long and double hanging is based on your clothes. Typical reasons to get in touch are setting aside a corner of a large bedroom and more space for clothes and shoes, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a part of London with mixed housing, like much of the city, bedrooms range from box rooms to large rooms with bays and sloping ceilings. Fitted furniture can suit each, sized and laid out for the room. Every wall in Church End homes is measured on site, because none is assumed to be square.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. If you live in a block, check any rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. We start with the space and the clothes it needs to hold, from long coats to shoes.
  2. We visit to measure up and go through the layout.
  3. A quote follows, setting out the design and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. We build everything in our workshop.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How to prepare

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Arranging a design visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Is bespoke worth it?

Choosing bespoke means a design visit, a quote, workshop time and fitting, as well as a bigger outlay. What you get is storage designed for what you own and the space you have. Walls and floors are seldom perfectly flat in any home, and standalone units show it with gaps and wobbles. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room as they go in.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Bedroom storage in Church End

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Church End were built before 1919 (about 36%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The centre of Church End is within about a quarter of a mile of the Finchley Church End Conservation Area. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Church End is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Heath Hall, about 2.1 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind walk-in wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a period home close to St Margaret's Church, tall ceilings give walk-in wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

What it costs

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Parking near your home
  • How big the furniture is

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

FAQs: walk-in wardrobes in Church End

Will a conservation area stop me having walk-in wardrobes fitted in Church End?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you cover homes near New Southgate station?

Yes, homes across Barnet and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

How long will the walk-in wardrobe take to fit?

It depends on the room. How long the fitting takes depends on how much hanging, shelving and drawer space goes in, and your quote sets out the fitting days, so you will know before we start.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.
