Under-stairs storage in North Finchley
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, typically with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. At the design visit in North Finchley, we note what’s there and design around it. If you’re living with needing a compact spot for a laptop and a vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Some homes have eaves, some have bays and some have neither, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. Whatever kind of home yours is in North Finchley, we start by looking at what’s there. The storage is made in our workshop and fitted in your home.
We write quotes in plain English. You’ll see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

What affects the cost of under-stairs storage
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- The internal fittings
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- How big the furniture is
- Doors and drawers, and how many
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What we need to know
The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you get in touch, it is useful to send:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough sizes: width, height and depth
You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.
Making use of awkward spaces in North Finchley
About 29% of the homes in the area around North Finchley went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 26% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of North Finchley, Historic England’s list includes Coachhouse Between Number 34 and 36 (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Christ Church (Grade II), less than half a mile south. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your street in North Finchley joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
Living in a block of flats near New Southgate station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Friary Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Heath Hall, about 2.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.

When you need someone else
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase

- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Pull-out drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Whatever the age of your home, the furniture is fitted to the walls you have, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Spray-painted pieces arrive finished; hand-painted ones can be finished on site.
- It starts when you get in touch about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is made in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

What else we make in North Finchley
Caring for painted furniture
A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
- Note the things that need a home under the stairs
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
A hand-painted finish is easy to touch up if it gets marked. Keep a little of the paint, or a note of the colour, for later. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. A quick sort every so often stops drawers getting too heavy. Wipe up any spills, particularly near the floor, before they dry.
Could you do it yourself?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Questions we are often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to New Southgate station?
Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in North Finchley?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.
