Bespoke kitchens in Collier Row

How we make bespoke kitchens for Collier Row

Kitchens in period houses bring their own challenges. Few walls are flat, and floors often fall away from the walls, sometimes noticeably over a single run of units. We scribe the cabinets to the walls and set them level on adjustable feet or a plinth giving a level line for the worktop you choose. Most enquiries start with a kitchen for a room that isn’t square and a dresser that suits a period house, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Knocked-through kitchen-diners in older semis sometimes keep a chimney breast, and the recesses beside it can take a dresser or larder. Around Collier Row, where interwar homes and semis are a big part of the housing, the design can make the most of it. A blocked chimney still needs ventilating, and damp is sorted first.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Kitchens in Collier Row: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 59% of the housing in the area around Collier Row, with about 33% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Collier Row include Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. The ULEZ, run by TfL, takes in all of London, so Havering is inside it. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Collier Row is covered by it. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

If you live near Raphael Park, a cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If you live in a flat close to Romford station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Collier Row is in the London Borough of Havering, about 1 mile south of Romford. Design visits and fitting in Collier Row can be on a Saturday, by prior arrangement. Collier Row is one of the places in Havering where we make bespoke kitchens.

In RM1, RM5 and RM7, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Streets in the area include Elm Road, Percy Road and Seymer Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for bespoke kitchens. Close by, we also work in Rise Park (1 mile north-east), Romford (1 mile south), Chadwell Heath (2 miles south-west), Rush Green (2 miles south) and Becontree Heath (2 miles south-west). Other parts of Havering we cover include Hornchurch (3 miles south-east), Gallows Corner (2 miles east), Heath Park (2 miles south-east), Elm Park (3 miles south), Rainham (5 miles south) and Upminster (4 miles south-east).

  • New sockets or circuits
  • Painting the walls around the kitchen
  • Any work on the gas supply

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Islands where space allows
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Larders and dressers

Questions we are often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Collier Row?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

I live near Romford station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

What prompts bespoke kitchens in Collier Row

People also want a kitchen that is built to last and can be repainted, which suits a long-term home. Hand painting is simple to touch in or refresh over the years.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • A layout for a small or awkward room
  • Tall larder storage
  • A painted dresser for the kitchen
  • A kitchen finished in your colours

For a family home near Rise Park Infant School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

How fitting works for bespoke kitchens

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You tell us about the room and how you use it. Larders, dressers and islands can all be part of it, where space allows.
  2. At the design visit we measure the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are made at our workshop. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: we fit the cabinets, and your plumber, electrician and an engineer on the Gas Safe Register handle the services. We don’t arrange these trades ourselves.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Arranging a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard cabinets come in set widths, so the room has to fit the units. Bespoke cabinets are made to the room’s real sizes, so the runs can fill the space properly. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

There is no price list, because each job is designed for a single room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.
