TV and media units for homes in Collier Row

The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with room around it so it does not look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. Most enquiries start with a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and space for a soundbar and speakers, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Collier Row, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but cables normally still show somewhere. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access left for later changes. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

What you get with us

  • Made for your room, not a standard size
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • 300+ projects completed
  • Finished by spray or by hand

See our comparison of bespoke and off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.

When you need someone else

We make and fit furniture, and we don’t do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Structural changes to the wall

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

What happens on fitting day

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You send us a few details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use, including the size of the screen.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and discuss the design.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Tell us about parking near your home

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

TV and media units in Collier Row: local notes

About 59% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Collier Row went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Collier Row include Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Havering sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. We ask about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Living in a block of flats near Romford station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses like Hare Hall, about 1.7 miles east. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. If your children go to Rise Park Infant School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Collier Row is about 1 mile south of Romford, in the London Borough of Havering. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Collier Row is part of that. We cover places right across Havering.

Looking after your furniture

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles

Vents and equipment shelves gather dust, so a quick clean now and then helps. Clear vents keep equipment cooler.

Leave any new socket or wiring work to your electrician, and do not daisy-chain adaptors.

Questions we are often asked

Is Collier Row in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. Collier Row is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Havering and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Romford station?

Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so it sits tight to the room.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
