Fitted cupboards in Collier Row

Gas meters, electricity meters and fuse boards tend to be where you’d least like them, under the stairs, in a hallway or beside the front door. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so we design doors or removable panels that make that easy. People normally come to us about storage for coats and shoes in the hallway and boxing in a boiler with room for servicing, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Walls in houses from between the wars are usually straighter than in older ones, but seldom perfect. Around Collier Row, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, and every piece is still scribed where it meets the wall. Each piece is levelled on site, so doors, lids and drawers line up.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Storage in Collier Row homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Collier Row were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Collier Row, Historic England’s list includes Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. Parking controls in London are set borough by borough, so Havering has its own. Where a street in Collier Row is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

If you live near Raphael Park, fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hare Hall, about 1.7 miles east. For a period home anywhere nearby, a landing recess can take a linen cupboard built to its exact size.

Collier Row is about 1 mile south of Romford, within the London Borough of Havering. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Collier Row is part of that. In Havering, Collier Row is one of the places we cover.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. You contact us about fitted cupboards.
  2. At the design visit we plan the cupboards and check how the sections will get in.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we build the cupboards in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in and fit them, scribed to the walls.

Arranging a design visit

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

When is bespoke worth it?

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

There is a place for both. For a square alcove and a tight budget, a ready-made unit may do the job. Where the room is tricky, the walls are uneven or you want the cupboard to look built in, fitted joinery is usually the better answer. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Pricing fitted cupboards in Collier Row

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The internal fittings
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • The number of doors and drawers

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

What we need to know

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

  • Tall cupboards where space is short
