Built-in bookshelves in Enfield Highway: what you get

If a radiator sits where you’d like shelves, it’s worth planning carefully. The heat needs somewhere to go, so we do not box a radiator in without leaving space or an opening for it. Often the simplest answer is to stop the shelves short of it. If you’re living with shelving behind a desk for books and files and shelves packed two rows deep, built-in bookshelves made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

A good part of the housing around Enfield Highway is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, and that layout shapes where built-in bookshelves work best. Walls in houses of that age are normally straighter than in Victorian ones, though they’re still checked and scribed where needed.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Enfield Highway?

Yes. Enfield Highway is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Enfield and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Enfield Highway?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

We set the depth to suit what you own. Another option is deeper storage below and shallower shelves above.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Plan heavy items for the lower shelves
  • Let us know about access early
  • Measure your tallest and deepest books
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Put coasters under anything that holds water. Wipe up spills right away.

Pricing built-in bookshelves in Enfield Highway

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Getting in touch

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It is enough to send:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Approximate measurements of the space

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly during the design visit. To get started, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

How fitting day works

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections made at our workshop, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors are covered from the door to the room.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. The bookcase is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it is best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Arranging a design visit

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

What built-in bookshelves cannot fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Repairing loose plaster or weak walls before fitting
  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Decorating the rest of the room

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Is bespoke worth it?

Off-the-shelf bookcases are cheaper and quick to buy. They also come with you when you move. Built-in shelves stay with the house and are made for its walls. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
