What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the room and the number of cupboards and drawers, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- It starts when you contact us about storage in your loft.
- We visit to measure and look at what’s behind the knee walls.
- A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
- We make the cupboards and drawers in our workshop, cut to the slope, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready to fill.
Preparing the room
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Loft storage for homes in Hook
Dormers are a natural place for shelving or a small desk. Dormers have their own shapes, and walls that are seldom square. Each piece is scribed to the dormer. It adds storage without taking up the main floor. At the design visit in Hook, we’ll look at what fits. If your home has seasonal things cluttering the loft room and a dormer that isn’t being used, eaves cupboards made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Around Hook, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. In a typical 1930s house, storage tends to hide in the bay, under the stairs and in the box room. Any meters or fuse board under the stairs stay accessible, and the storage is planned around them.
Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What we do not do
As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Insulation or ventilation work behind the eaves
- Structural changes, such as cutting into rafters or joists
- Approval for structural changes
Not sure whether your space suits loft storage? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you. How it works.

What affects the price in Hook
Prices vary from room to room, and it comes down to:
- The width and height of the space
- Parking near your home
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote.
Before the design visit
Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- Examples of the look you’re after
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Doors and drawer fronts
Fronts are made from moisture-resistant MDF and painted to your colour. The angled fronts match the ceiling, keeping the lines neat.
Plinths and scribe strips
In a loft room, walls, slopes and floors are rarely straight. We use scribe strips and a plinth to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.
Hook homes and loft storage
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 43% of the housing in the streets around Hook, with about 35% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Hook include Orchard Court (Grade II), under half a mile north-east. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hook (about 43%) date from between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Loft conversions are common in houses of that age, and the eaves can take fitted storage; we build the storage once the loft is converted or boarded.
Fitznells Manor, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the low eaves and slopes of a converted loft are worth using. If your children go to St Paul's CofE Primary School or a school nearby, eaves cupboards can be planned around what a family needs to keep, from coats and bags to sports kit. Close to Stokes Field? Eaves cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes often do not fit up narrow loft stairs. We make each piece in sections that fit up the stairs. It means a full wardrobe can still reach the room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Chessington North station?
Yes, homes across Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
Is Hook in the area you cover for loft storage?
Yes. We cover all of Kingston upon Thames and the rest of London, and Hook is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, and then we send a quote.
Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?
It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
