Under-Stairs Storage in Leamouth

Planning under-stairs storage for a home in Leamouth? We start with a design visit and a quote in writing.

  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • An old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall
  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter

Under-stairs storage for your home in Leamouth

What it costs

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • Parking near your home
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The overall size of the piece

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

It is useful to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

How we make under-stairs storage for Leamouth

Every staircase has its own shape. The underside slopes, the side of the stairs runs at its own angle and the floor below is rarely perfectly level. Each under-stairs cupboard we make follows those lines, so the fronts sit neatly against the stairs. That’s something a standard unit cannot do, in Leamouth or anywhere else. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and a staircase with untidy space beneath it.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Around Leamouth, many homes were built since 2000, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it’s made from and how it is finished.

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Newer developments sometimes have their own parking and loading rules, so let us know what applies during the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. It starts with some details from you about the space.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

How to prepare

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do you cover homes near Custom House station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in Leamouth is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

How long does the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. It is something we discuss during the design visit.

How is the price worked out?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Leamouth homes and under-stairs storage

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Leamouth were built since 2000 (about 81%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 8%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Leamouth include Trinity House Chain Locker and Lighthouse Block (Grade II), under half a mile south, and Church of St Luke (Grade II), under half a mile east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Purpose-built flats are home to about 86% of households in the area around Leamouth, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

If you live near Bow Creek Ecology Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. Queen's House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Luke, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

Tips worth knowing

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can
  • Note the size of anything tall you want to store

If you chose a hand-painted finish, small marks can be touched in. It is worth keeping a note of the colour so any touch-ups match. A spray-painted finish is smooth and even, and small marks often clean off with a damp cloth.

Don’t store things in front of the meter or fuse board. Readers and engineers need to reach them, and you may need to as well. With its own door, the meter stays in reach without much effort.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:

  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.
