- Islands where space allows
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Bespoke kitchens in Leamouth: what you get
We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. The finish is spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in colours agreed with you. If you’re living with a dresser that suits a period house and making the most of a galley kitchen, that is what kitchens are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
Many homes around Leamouth have been built since 2000, and newer homes normally have open-plan kitchens. A bespoke kitchen can be planned to sit well in that space, with an island where there is room. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so wall cabinets are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
What affects the cost of bespoke kitchens
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- How square the room is
- The internal fittings
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Parking and unloading on your street
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.
What we need to know
These details help when you get in touch:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

Advice
Bespoke kitchens for homes in Leamouth
In the area around Leamouth, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 81%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 8%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Leamouth, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. Where a home in Leamouth is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
Queen's House, about 2.1 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. For a flat near Custom House station, kitchens are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Bow Creek Ecology Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.
