Under-stairs storage for your home in London Docklands
Under-stairs storage in London Docklands: what you get
When the hall is tight, the space under the stairs is often the only place left for coats, shoes and bags. We can make a coat section with a rail or hooks, shoe drawers and a small shelf for keys and post. Painted in a colour you choose, it reads as part of the house rather than a piece of furniture. It’s a small change that makes a busy hallway feel ordered. People typically come to us about a dark, wasted space under the stairs and open space under the stairs that collects clutter; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Many homes around London Docklands have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Where other trades come in
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
What it’s made from
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Pull-out drawers
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
Practical tips
Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. These habits help most:
- Think about handles and how the fronts will look from the hall
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Tell us about parking at the design visit
- Think about what you will keep in each drawer
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is normally all they need. Avoid scourers and harsh chemicals, and dry the surface after wiping. Handles and the edges of drawers are touched most, so give them a wipe now and then.
Sharp tools and heavy boxes can chip a painted edge. Put tools in a case so they don’t knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.
Pricing under-stairs storage in London Docklands
What you pay depends on:
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.
Getting in touch
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
- Approximate measurements of the space
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What the furniture needs to hold
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
Questions we’re often asked
How do you fit under-stairs storage in a flat in London Docklands?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Under-stairs cupboards are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.
Does a conservation area in or near London Docklands affect fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
How long does the fitting take?
It depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. The design visit gives us what we need to plan it.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and any new sockets are best done before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
What finishes do you offer?
There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
How fitting day works
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space, along with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Do you need under-stairs storage in London Docklands?
A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

- Cleaning things with no proper home
- A fuse board that’s hard to get to
- A sloping corner nobody can reach
For an older house near St Peter's Church, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.
