Fitted cupboards in London Docklands

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly and still keeps access clear. Meter readers and engineers need to get to them, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. People typically come to us about cupboards for a utility or boot room and a neat cupboard around the boiler; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Many homes around London Docklands have been built since 2000, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Storage in London Docklands homes: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 70% of the housing in the neighbourhood around London Docklands, with about 14% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted cupboards are fixed and fitted. 15 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central London Docklands. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Purpose-built flats are home to about 89% of households in the streets around London Docklands, based on Census 2021. For a flat, fitted cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Close to Sir John McDougall Gardens? Fitted cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 1.8 miles south. If your own home is a period one, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep. Living in a block of flats near Canary Wharf station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

From workshop to your room

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the cupboards and the room, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so tell us what applies during the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch and let us know where the cupboards should go. It might be a hallway, a landing, a utility or a boot room.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and talk through doors, shelves and rails.
  3. A written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
  4. We make the carcasses, doors and shelves in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The cupboards are fitted in your home and trimmed to follow the walls.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Questions from London Docklands

I live near Canary Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in London Docklands?

Yes, we work across Tower Hamlets, London Docklands included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. Listed buildings may need listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

Does my lease affect fitted furniture?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

A painted MDF door has a clean, even look, and the moisture-resistant grade suits damper rooms.

Birch plywood

Long shelves in a cupboard need to stay straight under load, and birch plywood is a good fit. We size each shelf for its span, depth and load.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases.

What we don’t do

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Wiring for lights or sockets
  • Relocating meters or the fuse board
  • Any plumbing in a utility room

Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Adjustable shelves
  • Ventilated doors
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish

Practical tips

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. Here are our suggestions:

  • Think about how the cupboards will get in
  • Leaseholders: check your lease first
  • Let us know about meters and boilers in the space
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit

Keep the boiler cupboard clear inside, and don’t block the ventilation. The doors open wide for servicing, so the engineer can reach the boiler.

Keep boilers, meters and fuse boards in mind from the start. They shape the design, and planning around them is much easier than changing things later.
