Under-Stairs Storage in Heron Quays

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make under-stairs storage for homes in Heron Quays, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf storage comes in the colours the maker offers. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can sit with the walls, the banisters or the skirting. In a compact new-build room, standard sizes rarely fit the walls exactly, and fitted furniture uses that space. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

What you get with us

Under-stairs storage in Heron Quays: what you get

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you are living with an under-stairs cupboard full of clutter and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Hallways in newer flats and houses are often short, with doors opening off every side, which leaves little wall for storage. With many homes around Heron Quays built since 2000, the hall is often where we look first. A shallow cupboard can take coats, shoes and the vacuum cleaner without blocking a door.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Fitted storage in Heron Quays

In the streets around Heron Quays, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 68%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 12 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Heron Quays. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. More than half of the homes in the area around Heron Quays (about 68%) were built since 2000, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Homes built since 2000 rarely have much storage, and they tend to have stud walls, so under-stairs cupboards are designed with fixings to suit.

If you live in a flat close to Canary Wharf station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Queen's House, about 1.7 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Close to Sir John McDougall Gardens? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

What happens on fitting day

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. First you let us know about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them.
  2. We visit to measure the space and talk through the design with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are built in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home, fit it and leave it ready to use. Any meters stay easy to reach.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Heron Quays

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • How big the furniture is
  • The internal fittings
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

A few details help us understand the job before we visit. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Whether it’s a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • Your postcode and the borough

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, message us from the contact page. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Canary Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Tower Hamlets and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. We set it all out in a quote in writing.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.

Which materials go into your under-stairs cupboards?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, and birch plywood is strong, so it suits drawer boxes and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Where other trades come in

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
