About our under-stairs storage in Lower Holloway
Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. Cupboards suit the taller end, where coats can hang and a vacuum cleaner can stand. Many designs for homes in Lower Holloway combine the two. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a staircase with untidy space beneath it and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes.
Most households around Lower Holloway live in purpose-built flats, so storage has to be found in the hallway, the recesses and any bay. Each piece is built in sections sized for the route into the flat. Boilers and fuse boards in a hall cupboard keep the access and ventilation they need.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about under-stairs storage
I live near Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Islington and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
I live in a flat in Lower Holloway. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Under-stairs cupboards are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Who chooses the colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it is a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking near blocks of flats can be limited, and loading may need planning, so tell us about bays, permits or any loading area at the measuring visit. The sections are assembled in the flat and fixed to suit the walls. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You let us know about the space under the stairs.
- At the design visit we measure and plan how you’ll use the space.
- We send a written quote covering the design, materials and finish.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
- Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.
Before we arrive
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Empty the space we will be working in
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To book a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:
- Painting the hallway walls and ceiling
- Moving gas pipes under the stairs
- Relocating meters, which your energy supplier deals with
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Flats, leases and landlords
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Is bespoke worth it?
Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Bespoke storage is designed for one space and built to suit it, with birch plywood drawer boxes that hold screws well and carry weight. The right choice depends on how hard you want the space to work. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Why people ask for under-stairs storage in Lower Holloway
In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It also takes pressure off the other cupboards in the house.
Requests we hear often include:
- Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
- No room for a small desk or a place to work
- Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
- Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
For an older house near St David, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.
What to check before you book
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether they measure the room themselves
Fitted storage in Lower Holloway
About 44% of the homes in the area around Lower Holloway went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Lower Holloway is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Controlled parking zones cover much of inner London, and each borough runs its own. That normally means a van in Lower Holloway needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Near listed buildings like The Clock Tower, under half a mile south-west of the centre of Lower Holloway, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If your children go to Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
