Under-stairs storage in Finsbury, Islington

Under-stairs storage for your home in Finsbury: pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs. We visit to measure and go through the design, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it.

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • Space under the stairs that’s hard to use

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register
  • Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
  • Painting the hallway walls and ceiling

Under-stairs storage in Finsbury

Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Finsbury, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about the low end of the space going to waste and a fuse board that’s hard to get to.

A large number of homes around Finsbury date from 2000 onwards, and in London many homes of that age are flats in newer developments. Boilers, cylinders and consumer units often sit in a hall cupboard, and any new storage keeps their access and ventilation. Shallow cupboards suit narrow halls, so the hallway still feels open.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What it costs

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • Parking near your home
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Getting in touch

Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, send us a few details through our contact form.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so it’s useful to let us know at the design visit. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. First we hear what’s under your stairs now and what you need.
  2. We measure the space, the slope and the floor, and note any meters or fuse boards.
  3. We talk through drawers, cupboards and coat storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. The storage is made in our workshop and painted in your colour.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Advice

Making use of tricky spaces in Finsbury

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Finsbury were built since 2000 (about 36%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Finsbury, 30 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. All of London, Islington included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to every van that comes to fit furniture in Finsbury. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

For a family home near Prior Weston Primary School and Children's Centre, deep drawers suit the bulky things families collect, from scooters to swimming kit. Near listed buildings like Church of St Giles, less than half a mile south of the centre of Finsbury, older homes may keep original joinery that under-stairs cupboards can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your home is one of the older houses near Jewin Welsh Presbyterian Chapel, pull-out drawers can reach right to the back of a deep under-stairs space.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Finsbury

Is parking a problem for fitting in Finsbury?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Finsbury?

Yes, we work across Islington, Finsbury included, and across the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you use our contact form.

What is under-stairs storage made from?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Drawers usually involve more work than plain shelving, and the finish makes a difference too. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

Boards, parts and paint

Spray-painted finish

Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. It’s done in our workshop, before the storage comes to your home. The colour is agreed with you.

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It takes a spray-painted or hand-painted finish well, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.
