Bespoke kitchens in Lower Holloway: what you get

Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there is comfortable space on every side, and in a narrow kitchen an island can make the room harder to use. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts. Most enquiries start with a painted kitchen in a colour you choose and a kitchen island with room around it; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Lower Holloway, and in a flat, the kitchen is often small or open to the living space. A bespoke kitchen can use the full width and height of the walls. Everything is built in sections that fit the route into the flat.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

How it’s made

Larder and dresser units

Larders and dressers can fill an alcove or end a run in a way standard units can’t.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which suits drawer boxes and shelves. The edge can be left on show or painted.

Is bespoke worth it?

A bespoke kitchen takes more planning than picking units from a range. In return, the storage, layout and finish are designed for you. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit.

Why choose us

Bespoke kitchens in Lower Holloway: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Lower Holloway were built before 1919 (about 44%) and since 2000 (about 24%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for kitchens, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Lower Holloway, Historic England’s list includes The Clock Tower (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Presbytery (Grade II), under half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If you live on or close to a main road in Lower Holloway, let us know at the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Witanhurst, about 2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings can take larder cupboards right up to the top. If you live in a flat close to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Drilling can be heard through the walls and floors of a block, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. First, you let us know about the room. Say a little about the way you cook.
  2. The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout, where space allows.
  3. A quote in writing is sent to you.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop.
  5. The cabinets are fitted in your home, with plumbing, gas and electrics by your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician.

How to prepare

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Getting a quote

Advice

Questions from Lower Holloway

My home in Lower Holloway is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

I live near Caledonian Road & Barnsbury station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Islington and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you build an island in my kitchen?

Where space allows, yes. An island needs clear floor around it to open doors and move about, and we check this at the design visit. If the room is narrow, we will suggest other layouts.

What materials do you use for kitchens?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray painting or hand painting. Your quote sets out the materials and finish.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do you supply the worktop and appliances?

We plan the kitchen around the worktop, sink and appliances you choose. It’s useful to choose them before the design is final, and the quote confirms what’s included.

The problems bespoke kitchens solve

An extension or a knocked-through room is a common starting point. A new room needs a kitchen planned for its shape and light, and building work itself is for your builder.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A kitchen finished in your colours
  • A kitchen for a room that isn’t square
  • Open shelves with cupboards below
  • Spaces sized for your oven and fridge

For a family home near Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Flat-pack or bespoke?

It is worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
