- Storage that doesn’t match the hallway
Under-stairs storage designed for your room
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Mention it when you get in touch.
About our under-stairs storage in Lower Morden
Where the space under the stairs opens onto a room, a compact desk can fit beneath it. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. It is worth talking through at the measuring visit in Lower Morden. If your home has wanting a quiet corner for paperwork and a fuse board that’s hard to get to, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
An interwar house tends to have truer walls than a Victorian one, though rarely square corners. Around Lower Morden, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so we still scribe every piece to the wall. Lids, doors and drawers are set level on site so they run true.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Lower Morden
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How square the room is
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The number of doors and drawers
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.
Before the design visit
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Examples of the look you’re after
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Common questions about under-stairs storage
Is parking a problem for fitting in Lower Morden?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do you cover homes near St Helier station?
Yes. We cover all of Merton and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?
Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Birch plywood holds screws well, which matters for drawers that carry weight. Your quote confirms the materials and finish.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, normally behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Caring for painted furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Empty the cupboard so we can measure every corner
- Find out what sits in the space now, from meters to pipes
- Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
- Let us know about parking during the design visit
Decorating around the storage is for your decorator, and it’s best to protect the new paintwork while they work. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, get in touch through our contact form and we will talk it through.
Keep the doors and drawers closed when the space is not in use. Overfilled drawers put strain on the runners, so it pays to sort them now and then. Deal with any wet shoes or umbrellas before they mark the base.
From workshop to your room
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
- We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
- You receive a written quote for the storage.
- The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
- The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
Getting a quote
To make a start, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.
Advice
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Period walls are rarely flat, and floors are often out of level. Ready-made units leave gaps that need filler pieces. We scribe each under-stairs cupboard to follow the walls and the stairs, and set it level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Making use of awkward spaces in Lower Morden
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Lower Morden were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 85%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 6%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Upper Morden Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Lower Morden. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mainly about the outside of buildings. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 42% of households in the area around Lower Morden, the 2021 Census shows. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
For a flat near St Helier station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. The wider area includes historic houses such as Southside House, about 2 miles north. If your own home is a period one, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your children go to Aragon Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.
