Under-stairs storage in North Hyde
Under-stairs storage in North Hyde
Deep pull-out drawers bring the back of the space within reach. Rather than reaching into the dark, you pull the drawer towards you and see what’s inside. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. Many designs for homes in North Hyde combine the two. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter and a hallway crowded with coats and shoes.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the tricky spaces vary too: a bay, the space under the stairs, a hallway recess or the eaves of a converted loft. The furniture is made for the space as it is. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Fitting day, step by step
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. It helps to clear the room and the route in before fitting day, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.
- You contact us about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure the space at several points along the slope, as stairs and walls are rarely square in older houses.
- We send a written quote for the storage.
- In our workshop we build every part from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, following the slope we measured.
- On fitting day the units are set level and scribed to follow the stairs and walls. The finish is sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand once it is in.
Before we arrive
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
Ask for a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t typically do that in an older room.
Caring for painted furniture
None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:
- Make a list of what you want to store before the design visit
- Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Plan decorating around the fitting
Wiping the fronts with a soft, damp cloth is usually all they need. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The edges of drawers and the areas around handles pick up marks first.
Keep sharp or very heavy items away from the painted fronts. Put tools in a case so they do not knock the paint. A small chip on a hand-painted finish is easy to touch in.

The problems under-stairs storage solve
Most people get in touch because the space has become a dumping ground. Things get pushed to the back, piled on top of each other and forgotten. Well-planned drawers and shelves give each thing a home, and you no longer need to empty the cupboard to reach one thing.
Typical reasons people contact us include:
- Space under the stairs that’s hard to use
- The low end of the space going to waste
- Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show
- A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
If you live in a flat close to Southall station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Your questions about under-stairs storage in North Hyde
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in North Hyde?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in North Hyde?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the design visit.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
It’s built in our workshop, to the design and sizes agreed after the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Is it possible to have a desk built under the stairs?
It depends on the height and how open the space is. At the design visit we will say whether a desk makes sense there. Where it works, it makes a neat spot for a laptop and paperwork.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
What it costs
The price for your room depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking near your home
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.
What to send when you get in touch
Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- What the furniture needs to hold

Storage in North Hyde homes: local notes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 29% of the housing in the neighbourhood around North Hyde, with about 26% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The centre of North Hyde is within about a quarter of a mile of the Canalside Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you are not sure. A quarter or more of the homes in the neighbourhood around North Hyde (about 26%) were built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Homes from that era tend to have little built-in storage, so under-stairs cupboards make a real difference, with fixings chosen for the wall.
For an older house near St Leonard's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. Close to Minet Country Park? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
