What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how much storage you want under the stairs, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You tell us about the space under the stairs.
  2. We come to measure and talk through the design.
  3. A quote in writing follows.
  4. We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and run through each drawer and door with you.
  6. New paint needs time to cure fully, so open and close things gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a written quote. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Heston

Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. We can build a desk with shelves above and a drawer or two below. If you’d like a socket or a light, your electrician fits it and we plan the furniture around it. We will look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Heston. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about no room for a small desk or a place to work and a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter.

Coats, shoes, bags and the vacuum cleaner all need somewhere to go in a family house. Around Heston, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Anything that needs to stay reachable, like meters or a fuse board, is designed around.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

Materials and finishes

Moisture-resistant MDF

With wet shoes and coats coming in, a moisture-resistant grade of MDF is a sensible choice. It gives the painted fronts a smooth base, and it holds its shape in the space under the stairs.

Plinths and scribe strips

Walls are rarely flat and floors rarely level, in older homes particularly. We use scribe strips at the walls and a plinth at the floor to take up the difference. The result is neat, even lines all round.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Do you need under-stairs storage in Heston?

With more people working from home, some want a desk tucked under the stairs. Where the space is open to a room, a built-in desk with shelves can fit there neatly. It is a modest workspace, well suited to a laptop and the household paperwork.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • A sloping corner nobody can reach
  • Stairs open to a room, with clutter on show

For a flat near Southall station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.

FAQs: under-stairs storage in Heston

Is parking a problem for fitting in Heston?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Heston affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Can you match the storage to my hallway?

Yes. The storage is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you. It can match the walls, the stairs or the woodwork, so it sits quietly in the hall.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Heston homes and under-stairs storage

About 44% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Heston went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 33% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Heston, 5 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Around a third of the homes in the area around Heston (about 33%) were built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Post-war homes often have fewer nooks than older houses, so under-stairs cupboards add storage that was never built in, fixed to suit concrete, block or brick.

If you live in a period home close to St Leonard's Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live near Inwood Park, under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
