Built-in bookshelves in North Hyde

Span, depth and load decide whether a shelf will stay straight. Long spans carrying books need a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. Birch plywood is strong and helps shelves stay flat under heavy books. Typical reasons to get in touch are shelves deep enough for large books and a room lined with books; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Whether your home in North Hyde is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around your room rather than a standard size. Period rooms bring sloping floors and mouldings; newer rooms bring stud walls and service boxing. Each is measured, and the pieces are made to fit it.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having built-in bookshelves fitted in North Hyde?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in North Hyde?

Yes. North Hyde is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

It is your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

How long are you in the house for fitting?

The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in your own room. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we normally scribe the sides and the top. It is what makes shelving look part of the room.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • The internal fittings
  • Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The width and height of the space

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters

Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. When you’re ready, message us from the contact page. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. Either way, the day is planned at the measuring visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about built-in bookshelves.
  2. At the design visit we measure and plan the shelves together.
  3. Your written quote follows, covering the design, materials and finish.
  4. We make the shelving in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The shelving is fitted, fixed and checked with you. Fresh paint needs time to cure, so it’s best to load the shelves gently at first.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Built-in living-room furniture in North Hyde

The biggest shares of homes in the area around North Hyde were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 29%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how built-in bookshelves are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of North Hyde, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We will plan where the van can stop.

For a flat near Southall station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Minet Country Park? Built-in bookshelves can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. For an older house near St Leonard's Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Practical tips

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Consider deeper cupboards at the bottom
  • Mention anything very heavy, like records or large art books
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records

A soft, dry or slightly damp cloth is all painted shelves need. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Watch for damp marks on external walls behind the shelves. Damp needs its cause fixing by the right trade.
