About our under-stairs storage in Hounslow West
Not every staircase is in a house. A maisonette, a split-level flat or a staircase down to a lower floor can all leave space underneath. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections built in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Hounslow West, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are stairs open to a room, with clutter on show and space under the stairs that’s hard to use.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Hounslow West, many have had the loft converted, leaving low eaves and sloping ceilings. Those spaces, along with bays and hallways, are where fitted storage can add the most. We build storage in lofts that are already converted or boarded.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips
None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:
- Decide whether you’d like coats on hooks or on a rail
- Mention any decorating plans so the work can be timed well
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Make room so the whole space can be measured
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. You will know everything works as planned.
Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a drawer stops running smoothly, tell us about the room on our contact form and describe it.
Is bespoke worth it?
For a few hooks and a shelf for the vacuum, a ready-made solution can do the job. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. We’re happy to talk through which suits you during the design visit. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, which shows up against standard furniture. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

More for homes in Hounslow West
What prompts under-stairs storage in Hounslow West
In a smaller home, every bit of space counts. Turned into proper storage, it can hold the everyday things that would otherwise fill the hallway. It often eases the load on every other cupboard too.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Storage that does not match the hallway
- A fuse board that is hard to get to
- Cleaning things with no proper home
- A hallway crowded with coats and shoes
Close to Hounslow Heath? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.
Before you choose who makes it
- Will the doors close with even gaps?
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will the quote be in writing?
Questions we’re often asked
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you cover homes near Hounslow station?
Yes, homes across Hounslow and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Drawers make the low end useful, because you pull the back of the space to you. Cupboards suit the tall end, for coats or a vacuum cleaner.
Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?
Yes. We paint the storage in the colour you choose, by spray or by hand. You can match it to the walls, the banisters or the skirting, so it sits quietly in the hall.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Can you build storage around a gas meter or fuse board?
Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, usually behind its own door. Meter readers and engineers need access, so we never box them in.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- First you tell us about the stairs and what you’d like to store beneath them, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and discuss the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- You receive a written quote for the storage we’ve discussed.
- The drawers, doors and carcasses are made in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.
Preparing the room
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
