Under-Stairs Storage in Old Oak Common

Pull-out drawers, cupboards and coat storage under the stairs, designed for your room in Old Oak Common. We measure, design and quote first, then make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • Open space under the stairs that collects clutter
  • A tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out
  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go

Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Flat-pack furniture is designed to be easy to carry home and quick to assemble. Ours is designed for one staircase and built in our workshop to suit it, using birch plywood for strong drawer boxes and moisture-resistant MDF for painted fronts. Which suits you depends on how much you want from the space. Off-the-shelf depths can crowd a compact new-build room, while fitted furniture can be made shallower where space is tight. It can still go to the ceiling.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Under-stairs storage for homes in Old Oak Common

We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Old Oak Common. If you are living with the low end of the space going to waste and a staircase with untidy space beneath it, under-stairs cupboards made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Old Oak Common were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. The storage can sit on its own plinth or be scribed over the skirting.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Old Oak Common

Many people struggle with the shallow, sloping end under the bottom steps. You cannot stand up in it, and you cannot reach the back without kneeling. Pull-out drawers solve that by bringing the back of the space to you.

If you recognise any of these, it’s worth talking to us:

  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it
  • Nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board
  • Wanting a quiet corner for paperwork

Kelmscott House, about 2.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Changing where a meter sits, which is not carpentry
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.

  1. It starts when you get in touch with some details about the space.
  2. We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and go through the design, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. The drawers, doors and carcasses are made at our workshop. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The storage is fitted in your home and checked, drawer by drawer.

Before fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

Getting a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some pictures if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Willesden Junction station?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Old Oak Common?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Can the under-stairs storage be painted to match the hall?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

How long does it take to fit under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make every part in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
