Under-stairs storage for your home in Parsons Green

Under-stairs storage for homes in Parsons Green

Where a staircase is open to a living space, the storage under it becomes part of the room. That calls for clean lines, well-fitted doors and a finish that suits the rest of the room. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. In Parsons Green or anywhere else, the aim is storage that looks considered, not added on. Typical reasons to get in touch are cleaning things with no proper home and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large share of the homes around Parsons Green were built before 1919, and houses of that age are full of tricky spaces: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. Fitted storage is designed to make those spaces useful, scribed to walls that are rarely straight.

Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Imperial Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Parsons Green affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Is it possible to fit storage around a meter under the stairs?

Yes. The design keeps a clear way to the meter or fuse board, often with a door of its own. Access matters for readings and safety checks, so we design around it.

What materials do you use for under-stairs storage?

The storage is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, so it suits the doors and fronts, while birch plywood gives strength to the drawers and carcasses. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted.

Which works best under the stairs, drawers or cupboards?

Many designs use both. Deep pull-out drawers suit the shallow end under the bottom steps, while a cupboard at the tall end takes coats, the vacuum or an ironing board. We’ll suggest a layout when we visit.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Any work on gas pipes or appliances
  • Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it is made from

  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

For a few hooks and a shelf for the vacuum, a ready-made solution can do the job. Bespoke work earns its place when you want to use the whole space, from the tall end to the lowest corner. At the design visit, we can talk honestly about which approach suits your stairs. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Storage in Parsons Green homes: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Parsons Green were built before 1919 (about 60%) and since 2000 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Parsons Green is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 26% of households in the neighbourhood around Parsons Green, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before anything is fixed to the walls.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Hurlingham House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a family home near Lady Margaret School, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

What prompts under-stairs storage in Parsons Green

The low end of the space is usually the problem. You can’t stand up in it, and you cannot reach the back without kneeling. Drawers that slide out on runners turn that tricky corner into useful storage.

Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:

  • A vacuum cleaner that has nowhere to go
  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • No room for a small desk or a place to work
  • Storage that does not match the hallway

If you live near Parsons Green (park), under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things.

Choosing a carpenter

  • Whether you will get a quote in writing, not just a figure
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Real projects you can actually look at

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. In houses converted into flats, the route in may include a shared hall and stairs, so it’s useful to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a written quote for the storage.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Birch plywood

The drawers under a staircase can carry a real load. That is why we make drawer boxes from birch plywood, which is strong and holds screws firmly. Long shelves benefit from it too.

Pull-out drawers

Pull-out drawers bring the deep, low end of the space within reach. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. A set of drawers can step down to follow the line of the stairs.
